DockYard’s Work with Flywheel Featured in Showtime’s Billions

Flywheel TorqBoard

Flywheel’s sports and fitness system, designed and developed by DockYard, had a cameo in the Showtime hit television series Billions, Season 4, Episode 9, “American Champion.” When US Attorney Bryan Connerty (Toby Leonard Moore) needs to work out some frustrations in a cycling class and runs into Dr. Gus (Marc Kudisch), they’re using Flywheel’s TorqBoard system to judge what stuff they’re made of.

The system isn’t just for power-obsessed TV characters. Flywheel’s goal was to create dramatic customer engagement and an advanced user experience, while improving scalability and streamlining the tools used by the fitness studio’s staff.

To accomplish those goals, DockYard integrated browser-rendered interfaces and Ember.js web technology to create a new touchscreen control panel for instructors to help class members. On the backend, a new system built using WebSockets enables a more streamlined and robust communication model than the previous USB-based infrastructure could. Real-time changes to data allow riders to see when a class will start, class modes, and their bike designation, among other events.

Flywheel’s system was built with growth and scalability in mind. As the company has opened fitness studios and expanded its cycling and sports services, the TorqBoard system can grow to accommodate more users — from health and wellness seekers to cycling and fitness enthusiasts to fictional moguls.
